Library and Office Services

Community library, resource centre, and office services for the Haku community.

HWC operates a small community library for use by members and affiliates, including local schools and other groups. Unity Library is now contributing to the collection. The library is now opened every day by HWC staff volunteers for reading and drop-in visitors. Our latest exciting news for the Library is that, with funding from INDIGO foundation, we are able to set up reading circles and have decided to launch these by holding a 'Back to School' essay writing competition with school stationery packs as prizes for Elementary, Primary and Secondary student entries.

Starting February 2019, HWC Luman Hipakoko and Library has become the FODE centre for Haku students (30-40 enrolments coming in) for distance education through the Department of Education Uni Centre and FODE office at Kubu, Buka. Haku schools who access the Resource Centre comprise 50 Early Childhood Village Kindergartens, 11 Elementary Schools (Prep, E1 and E2 grades), 9 Primary Schools (Grades 3-8) and 1 Haku High School (Grades 9-10). This includes children borrowing books and teachers attending in-service training at the Centre.

In addition, HWC provides office services such as printing and photocopying at modest prices. Previously, people had to travel to Buka Town over 60 km away, at a cost of 30 Kina (about $15 AUD), to access such services.

Education Courses and Inservice Training

HWC has hosted and catered for large education courses including:

  • 2018 UNITY LIBRARY 1 week Training of Trainers for teachers to establish school libraries
  • Division of Elementary Education in 2018
  • 2019 Halia and Haku Teachers In service courses with Save the Children

These will continue each term at HWC facilities.

Inservice for primary school teachers
From 1-4 August 2017 HWC hosted an inservice, conducted by Marilyn Havini and attended by all Hako Elementary School teachers. Activities included:

  • library resources, borrowing
  • Making Big Books and using them in class (literacy)
  • making dominos (numeracy)
  • making play dough (craft)

As you can see from the photos, the workshops were very successful and enjoyable.
