To accomplish the building itself, HWC took every economic measure possible to honour the sacrificial giving of so many individual Australian supporters. We had no money for contractors, so we supervised the whole building project with our own members, husbands, fathers, uncles and keen Haku youth who had some experience in vocational building and plumbing courses.
The building has been finished with attention to detail that reflects the love and pride of the building teams, the joy expressed by everyone associated with this successful project.

Luman Hipakoko opening: 4 November 2017.

Songs were written and performed by Bamboo Bands for the official opening which was attended by 4 people representing overseas funders, 2 AVI Country Team staff, and crowds of Community leaders, Village Chiefs, Government officials and women members.
HWC members and the whole Landowner Clan hosted the feast in celebration of a great victory for women, for development, and for justice prevailing – after the women’s struggle from March to September to win approval of all Haku society.
The Official Blessing at the opening was led by a Catholic Priest, a Methodist Minister, a United Church Minister, a Christian Revival Crusade Pastor, a Christian Revival Church Pastor, an ABG Independent Church Pastor.

Acknowledgments: funding and other assistance

HWC gratefully acknowledges the many individuals and organisations who supported the building projects with donations of money, goods, time and expertise. Many but not all are acknowledged here.
  • Amber Gard, architect, who designed the building pro bono.
  • Hon Louta Atoi, former MP for North Bougainville in PNG Parliament, who in November 2016 provided funding of K10,000 towards Phase 1. Hon Louta Atoi also provided K5,000 towards Phase 2, which was used by HWC to prepare  for construction by clearing the site, profiling and constructing a pit toilet  and a haus kuk (traditional kitchen).
  • Partners in International Collaborative Community Aid Ltd (PICCA), which in 2017 provided $20,000 in funding, and raised a further $20,000 towards the project through crowd funding.
  • C3 Church in Cherrybrook, Sydney, provided seed funding of A$4,000 as ‘seed funding’ for site profile and foundation preparation. The church also held a Fashion Parade with all proceeds of A$7,000 going to the HWC for Luman Hipakoko.
  • Bangalow CWA, which contributed A$1,000.
  • the Australian tradesmen who came to Hako to work on the building as volunteers, and also donated a further $5,000.
  • Hon Robert Chicka, MHR Member for Haku in ABG Parliament, who pledged ongoing support for the Library and Educational Programs (especially to Early Childhood) and the Rice Milling project in Haku Agriculture developments (Phase 3).
  • Donations from supporters in Australia helped to supply extra building details including a signboard on the roadside announcing HWC Services.
All of these facilities made possible the preparations for Phase 3 major building project.
Phase 1 (Resource Centre) was made possible by:
  • Torohin Havini, who owns the building on his family clan land and offered it to the HWC for the Resource Centre.
  • AVI which provided a grant of K18,600 for the building project through its Community Grant Scheme in December 2015.
Australian supporters who provided clothes, materials, books, educational resources and equipment and paid for it to be shipped to Buka in 2014  (read more).
