Hako or Haku?

You may notice some inconsistent spelling of the word "Haku/Hako" on this website. This arises because the Haku language is still largely oral, and has not been fully transcribed. In recent years, the spelling "Haku" has become commonly used for the language and constituency of Haku.
However, the most accurate way to show the pronunciation of the final syllable is to use an umlaut - Hak
ö. When HWC was founded in 2006, it adopted this spelling in its name, as suggested by the late Moses Havini, one of the first generation of Haku people to receive a Western tertiary education. Hako Women's Collective have proudly held on to the distinctive spelling, although it is not now widely used.
